To provide counting practice
This is a counting game that can be played as soon as the students learn to count to 100 in English.
Any number can be chosen as the buzz number, but perhaps the first time around, at least with elementary students, it should be an easy one, such as 5.
The game proceeds as follow: The first student begins by saying, "one", the second student, "two", the third student, "three", the fourth student, "four", but the fifth student, instead of saying "five", says "buzz". The counting continues around the class, as rapidly as possible to add excitement to the game, and the student who would otherwise say "ten" will say "buzz". All multiples of the number 5 become buzz. If a student says the number rather than the word buzz they are out of the game. The last remaining student is the winner.
If another number is chosen, such as 3, then, in addition to all multiples of that number, all other numbers which contain a 3, such as 13 and 23 also become buzz. When the game reaches 30 the next ten numbers are all buzz and students will have to keep on their toes to discover where buzz stops and 40 begins.
This is a game that can be repeated more than once but it is a good idea to use a different number - and a more difficult one as buzz each time.
