Question Reference Letter

What does a reference letter include? Any ideas? Does it have to be real formal? I want to ask a friend to write one for me before going on the big ESL Job hunt!

Arrow sample Reference Letter

I think everyone in this thread owes me a drink I've attached the reference lettter (of course names have been changed). This is the exact same reference letter I used once.

It will give you an idea of what to include and writing a reference letter. Let me know if you need further help.

Smile resume question

Hello,
The information here has been helpful to me as well - I am also shortly headed into the job hunt for a teaching position. I have heard different opinions about adding your picture to a resume - does anybody here have any thoughts about how a picture of yourself on your resume would either help or hinder?
Thank you so much!

In my experience most schools want a picture but when you attach it to your resume most of them can't see it. It is easier to send your resume then another attachment with your photo so that they can view it.

It's good to ad a picture to your resume if you are caucasian. Sorry to sound racist though.

If you are non-caucasian, then I suggest leaving the photo off as a school or recruiter may then just put your resume aside.

Sad, but at times true!

Most important thing with resumes is to keep them very brief. You need to entice the employer and if they like you they will surely contact you for more information.

Resume sample

Perhaps it's what you are also including in your resume that stops schools and recruiters contacting you. Only include things that are relevant to the job.

If you are applying for a teaching job and already have 10 years experience, then don't highlight the fact that you worked as a part-time cleaner when you were 17 years old.

Do you have a university degree? Many recruiters and schools wont even contact you if you don't have a university degree, no matter what format your resume is in.

Be The Answer

Best advice anyone ever gave me - "Be the Answer they are looking for." If you know what the school is looking for - and you should by looking over enough job ads that list requirements - then only put in what they are looking for.

For instance, gfell had a great example about not putting in all the stuff that didn't matter - but I'll say you should go a step farther and ONLY put in what they want to hear. For me, I only say that I have a BA, that I'm TEFL certified, have nearly four years teaching experience IN CHINA, and have studied Chinese formally for one year.

I do NOT list all the other jobs I have had before or even during the times I have worked in China if it does not fit what they are looking for. Be selective. What jumps out to them is the puzzle piece that fits perfectly - people pay for answers to problems; therefore, be the answer to their problem of needing a teacher.

Lightbulb Resume writing tips

Good suggestions Hypiereon! When applying for a teaching job, often you may not even need a resume. You can list in your email your qualifications, age (if it goes in your favour), availability, and what you have been up to during the last 12 months.

They most probably will reply as they see your email as straight to the point and easy to digest. Once they reply to you, then they are more willing to reply after you have sent them your full resume, as a relationship already exists.

If you are unsuccessful, then you can ask for their reasons so you know what NOT to do or write for the next job application.

Tips for Applying an ESL Job
  • Keep your email brief.
  • Avoid long sentences and paragraphs.
  • Bullet points are great.
Now take a look at this post! Isn't it easy to read compared to some other posts?
