Celta but no degree in Sydney

Hi,

I've been working for a language school in Sydney for a week now and I was initially employed on a two-week trial that was likely to be extended to a permanent position. However, I was told by the DOS the other day that the school can't give me a permanent position since I don't have a university degree, which is a requirement for NEAS-accreditation. I really would like to get a permanent job, since I plan to stay in Sydney for some time, and relief teaching is a pain...
What are the prospects for getting a permanent job within an accredited school for qualified teachers who don't have a degree?
What about unaccredited schools? How and where can one find them?

Thanks,

Michael

Re: Celta but no degree in Sydney

Prospects are always going to be less than compared to someone that holds a degree. Whether you are teaching in Sydney, China, Korea or wherever, those who hold a degree are always going to get the best jobs and best pay. You will just have to settle for the leftovers so to speak.

Did you try going through the Yellow Pages or picking up foreign newspaper and trying to find schools that are targetting non-native English speakers. There is a magazine called Cheers, and the website is cheers.com.au I think. There may be ads in there of language schools you could apply to.

If you don't already, I would suggest a CELTA course or something with a bit of weight behind it. Just keep plugging away and sooner or later you will find a full-time job. Try and find a unique selling point that you can harness to your benefit. All the best!

Thanks

I do have a CELTA.
I guess I'll just have to keep on trying.
