Mental twister

Two men and one lady walked into a hotel and ask, “How much is it to stay the night”
The hotel night manager replied “ Thirty dollars” and they promptly pay the thirty dollars and leave for their room. After a while the night manager realized after reading the pricing schedule that the room was only twenty-five dollars and asks the porter (bellhop) to return the remaining five dollars to the people that just booked in.

The porter quickly took the five dollars and proceeded to enter the lift (elevator), on his way to their room on the fifth floor he asked himself “How are the three of them going to split the five dollars between them”, and decided to pocket two dollars.

Now I ask you this:
  1. the room originally cost thirty dollars right!
  2. The night manager realized that it was only twenty-five and wanted to give back the remaining five dollars right!
  3. The porter pocketed two dollars right!
  4. each person paid ten dollars each and was given back one making the payment, nine dollars each making a total of only twenty-seven now adding the two dollars the porter put in his pocket that would make a grand total of only twenty-nine dollars. Can anyone tell me what happen to the last one dollar?

Re: Mental twister

I came across this exact same riddle a year ago, and was dumbfounded too at first.

Only then to be told that it's the way you count it out. $1 is never missing, but the method of counting is in fact correct in your approach.

This is a very good exercise for adult student with a competent English level.

Thanks for sharing.
