![]() | Re: TEFL courses There is a difference between "internationally recognised" and "internationally accredited". Just about anything with a name can claim to be "internationally recognised".

![]() | Re: TEFL courses Hi Hypiereon, In answer to your query regarding "internationally recognised" TEFL certificates - employers/institutes offering IELTS tend to mean those certificates accredited by Cambridge University or Trinity College London i.e. the CELTA or Trinity Cert. TESOL. These were the original certificates formulated in the 70s and therefore set the standard. This is a slightly traditional view as many providers like SIT TESOL, LADO, TEFL International and of course EF's TEFL Certificate Training offer excellent courses which employers deem as internationally recognised because they contain the minimum 6 hours observed teaching practice with overseas students (as does the Level 4 Cert in TESOL offered by many providers in Australia - see Geo_star's entry). So basically the "internationally recognised" bit refers more to the content of the course rather than the provider of it. I hope this helps clear things up from an employer’s prospective. ![]() | Re: TEFL courses I am currently doing the same course. So far I find it a waste of time - mostly waffle and 'made - up' jargon that no PhD English student will ever recognise. Response time to questions is 4-7 days although they say maximum 1 day. I am doing the course now even though I have been teaching for some time, just to open a few closed doors, but I find the motivation a drag. But if your school will pay it may be worth it although that will add more pressure. Do what I did and just jump in ![]() |

![]() | Re: TEFL courses Unfortunately there is no Independent Board of Accreditation for TESL/TEFL Certificates and Diplomas. This means that each institute, school, or organization recognizes their own Certificate and accreditation comes from good practice, professional standards and reputation. |
