Question Teaching ESL - Confused!

Hi everyone!

I have a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education degree (secondary - English and History methods)...but I want to obtain a degree so I can teach ESL in Australian schools and also overseas.

Will a Graduate Certificate in TESOL run by a university allow me to do this? Or will a TESOL certificate only allow me to teach ESL abroad?

Thanks!

Teaching overseas

Most countries will require a university degree to teach overseas.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't a Graduate Certificate higher than a Bachelor degree? A Bachelor Degree is an undergraduate course and a Graduate Certificate is a postgraduate course.

Simply a certificate will not allow you to apply for a work visa when teaching overseas.

Yes to do a University Certificate you must have a Bachelor degree. I know that a Certificate on it's own won't get me a work visa but I have TWO Bachelor degrees and a European passport so that is not an issue. I am a qualified teacher! Just not in ESL method.

I just want to know what additional degree I should do in order to be a qualified ESL teacher both here and overseas???

Getting qualified to teach

To teach English overseas, it would be helpful to do a TESL/TEFL course.

To teach in Australia, it will depend on where you want to teach. For example, to teach in the public school system, the following is usually required:
  • A Working with Children Check
  • English language proficiency test if English is not your primary language
  • Academic and teaching qualifications
Currently, the biggest demand for teachers in Australia is for the secondary school system.
