![]() | MA ESL distance learning PLEASE HELP! Hello. I've been working in japan teaching at JrHS and I'm interested in getting a MA in ESL in order to increase my options and salary - and become a better teacher. The most well known and accredited distance learning program I know of is the CELTA from cambridge. Unfortunately it's very expensive and takes over 3 years to complete. In the US or Australia completing a MA should take between one and two years if you are full time. My question: does anyone have any information or know of distance learning programs that are quality and not as expensive or as long as the CELTA? Hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance! ![]() | CELTA course or Masters course? Hello chazrockwell, The CELTA is only a certificate and not a Masters. CELTA standing for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. Furthermore, it's not possible to do the CELTA via correspondence. It must be done at an approved centre as stipulated by Cambridge University. You can take the CELTA full-time over 4~5 weeks. Can you clarify exactly what course you are after? Is it a Masters in Education with a focus on TESL? Which course did you see that is over 3 years and very expensive?

![]() | No matter which university you study by correspondence, the fees are bound to be quite expensive. You are paying for the prestige of having a university qualification. It's relatively cheap for the uni to post out stuff and hold external exams. If a university dropped their prices to just above cost price, then everyone would flock to studying via correspondence. |

| Junior Member ![]() | UOP Online Distance Learning MA and PhD Hi, I completed my MA online with the Univeristy of Phoenix. I enjoyed it so much. I made many lasting and meaninful friends both with my peers and instructors. It took me a year and a half to complete but I loved every minute of my studies. I am now a PhD student at the UOP. I am going to have three residencies in the USA this time. I am looking forward to my first this coming June (2006). Everyone I have met at the UOP enjoyed their online learning. Their prices are the cheapest when compared to other online schools. You may contact me by SKYPE for further information. Best wishes, Sharing is caring. Nellie Deutsch http://www.nelliemuller.com |

![]() | Univeristy of Phoenix courses Interesting feedback there nelliemuller! Been viewing your websites, and quite interesting. Will look closer when I get time. Noted you studied at the University of Phoenix. What are their residencies like and are they compulsory? Correct me if I'm wrong, you can complete your whole degree online... Can the courses take less time if you study harder? And where are the exams held? Thanks for your time. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Another Option I've been doing some checking of my own into online Masters Programs. I have yet to find anything that just really jumps out at me at the moment - but this is one place I've been taking a close look at. http://www.une.edu.au/arts/LCL/disci.../appl_ling.htm Hope it helps. I'm not sure when I will be able to do this, or even if I really want to yet at this point. Just thinking things over, getting information, seeing what opporunities will open up because of the advanced degree and what not. As for China, this doesn't really seem to do me much good at the moment, but hey, being the only person with a MA in EFL/Linguistics might open doors I haven't thought of yet. All I know is that you should take your time in selecting a course. Do your homework about the school - having a good reference such as the one above doesn't hurt either. Get a lot of information, then sit back, let it kinda sink in, then when you ready to choose, pull the trigger and push for all you're worth! Personally I'd like to find a distance learning program that lets me work at my own pace - I'm a fast-track type who can really crank out the work. In college in America I was taking 22 credit hours with a writing class on the side - they allowed me to do the written work without actually attending the class, and I was cranking out 10 page research papers every 3 weeks. That's the pressure where my brai kicks into high gear and really starts to function. When things ar easy and slow, I get bored and my work gets sloppy. My pulled the best grades of all my years during that semester. So, I'm still looking for a fast-track program that will let me go my own speed. If anyone knows of such an animal - please post a website or something here. I'm also concerned about legitimacy. I don't want to get hooked up with a diploma mill, so if you have a genuinely good lead, let me know.

![]() | Distance Learning Courses A few years back I enrolled in the Heriot-Watt University MBA distance learning program. I was in Australia at the time, and it was possible to take as many modules as you thought you can cope with. You have a certain time frame to complete them. I think it was 7 years at the time to complete the module. When you feel comfortable with the module, then it's just a matter of booking yourself into the exam. The exam centers are in convenient locations worldwide.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Can you clear some questions up for me? You said that in the Heriot-Watt University MBA distance learning program you could take as many modules as you want and that it would take seven years to complete the module. I am confused by the double use of the word "module." Also, do they offer a MA Degree in EFL Teaching? If so, can you give me link to the specific page? You mention MBA as well - I assume you mean Masters of Business Administration, but wanted to be sure on that as well. Thanks! Keep up the good work - have really enjoyed the site, just wish more people would leave comments on the various posts.

![]() | It wont necessarily take 7 years to complete a module. Once you purchase a module, then you have 7 years to sit the exam. Module meaning subject. For example, I enrolled in the MBA program and my first module was Accounting. Yes, I meant a Masters in Business Administration. Heriot-Watt Univeristy does have a Languages Department where they do offer a Master of Arts in Foreign Languages and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Glad to hear you are enjoying the site. Thank you very much for the information you have kindly donated to assist other English teachers. Yes, would be great to see more members participate and give feedback. We are all here to help each other. Perhaps we should run a competition of some sort to encourage more feedback from silent members.

| Junior Member ![]() | Re: Univeristy of Phoenix courses Hi, I just completed my second year residency in Arlington, Virginia for a doctoral seminar. The UOPs doctoral dissertations are the most frequently read because of their value to the academia. The MA can be combined so that you could probably finish the program in less than a year and a half. Quote:
