Outcome of ESL Conferences

If you go to ESL conferences and foreign language conferences, what you see is interesting. At these conferences, what are the ideas and thoughts that fellow teachers are presenting to each other?

You no longer find teachers discussing new pattern practice techniques, analysis of the relative clause using stratificational grammar, or the like.

Instead, what teachers talk about is:

• using the newspaper in the English class
• getting students to understand TV
• role-playing
• drama, cooking techniques, art and craft

Using real-life techniques to teach English works. Students have more fun, get to know each other more, and learn a whole lot faster.

Using concrete spoken language and helping students to survive on the outside makes so much more sense than diving into overly complex grammar structures.
