Oral Communication the Goal

In a course in which oral communication is the goal, the test must be oral. This is difficult when a teacher has many students.

Some teachers are fortunate to have classrooms with cassette machines on which individual response of students to an oral examination can be recorded. In other cases, an oral test may have to be conducted on an individual basis.

However the logistics are solved, it is clear that written grammar tests are no measure of oral fluency - either comprehension or production.
