![]() | Lesson Plans for Adults Sample Lesson Plan: Age 20+. Group size 12. Larger class sizes need to be managed and controlled more closely than smaller class sizes. To help both student and teacher, a lesson outline should be written on the whiteboard prior to the commencement of the class. Point form of the tasks and areas to be covered is sufficient for this purpose. Task 1: Small Chitchat Pair-up students at random and have them discuss a certain topic or ask a certain question of each other. If there is an odd student out, assign 1 group of 3. Whilst students stand around the classroom mingling, the teacher will move about helping students and encouraging conversation. Task 2: Textbook work Students listen to the teacher presenting a new topic or grammar focus. To gauge student understanding, the teacher will ask random questions to students whilst progressing throughout the lesson of the text. Task 3: Pair work / Teamwork Often, it is too time consuming to always pair-up groups of 2 in larger classes. Hence, activities should be done in larger groups of 4 or so students. Assign a group activity closely coupled with the lesson of the textbook. It is important to note that whenever students are undertaking activities, the teacher move around the class giving advice and suggestions where needed. Task 4: Presentation Upon completion of the above activity, each group will then present their answers and final product to the class. The group will stand at the front of the class, with each member contributing a small part to the overall presentation. 1 critique and 1 complement can then be given by other class members at random selected by the teacher. The teacher will need to give clear instructions, and perhaps even give a demo presentation of what is expected. |

![]() | Re: Lesson Plans for Adults Just wondering, how would you teach grammar in English? In my very short year of experience, I always had problems with students not being able to understand what I say and trying to have them understand my lecture in grammar was even bigger problem. |

![]() | Re: Lesson Plans for Adults Danny, It really depends on the level you're teaching. Using the grammar terms does make it difficult--my students have been studying for 10 years and many don't know noun, verb, adjective, adverb. Just keep it slow and simple and give plenty of examples and practice exercises. Usually it's a good idea to focus on only one grammar point per lesson to reinforce the correct use.

![]() | Re: Lesson Plans for Adults DocS, For larger groups it's easier to have students work in groups. Give them a situation for a role play. Go around and correct mistakes that you hear. When the groups are finished, review some of the mistakes you heard so everyone understands the corrections. Might also have one or two groups perform the role play in front of the class (don't ask for volunteers, just choose groups). Go over variations of the conversations with the whole class and emphasize any specific grammar you want them to understand.
