Classroom Materials

Secondary Materials in the Classroom

When teaching a class, you need to be aware of the materials and props on offer to facilitate your teaching.

Primary learning materials would include the text book and use of the whiteboard. Secondary learning materials would include games, story books, and art and craft activities.

Select materials appropriate to the lesson focus. Use of classroom materials is only limited by a teacher's imagination.

Some ideas are:
  • Board Games: Do not feel limited to playing board games by the rules. Many board games can be used more imaginatively. Eg: Monopoly - rather than playing the game by the rules, why not ask the students to tell a 3 minute story based on their days adventure. And that the students have to base their adventure around the squares on the monopoly board.
  • Art and Craft: Get students to following directions on making something simple with scissors and glue. First teach students the directions you will use, then re-enforce this learning in practice via the use of art and craft. There are a wide range of art and craft websites with ready made worksheets for printing out.

The whole idea is to create interesting lessons for students. That way, students stay motivated and will always look forward to their English class.

lesson plans

I just make my own games in photoshop and ensure they use elicit the target language I want students to use. I then take them to a professional shop to get printed and use them over and over and over.
