Arrow 3.1 Lesson Plans for Children

Sample Lesson Plan: Age 3~4. Group size 6.

Task 1: Entry to the classroom

Students knock on the door announcing their intention to enter the classroom.
Student: Knock Knock
Teacher: Who is it?
Student: My name is ..."
Teacher: Hello ...
Student: May I come in please?
Teacher: Yes you may.
Teacher then opens the door and welcomes the student.

Task 2: Question and Answer

The English Teacher will have prepared a list of approximately 20 daily questions. Start with the first 3 questions on the list. As students become competent with the current questions, progresss to asking further questions from the list.

Sample questions would be:
  1. What's your name?
  2. How old are you?
  3. How are you?
  4. Do you have any brothers and sisters?
  5. Where do you live?
  6. Do you like ice-cream?
  7. Are you hungry?
  8. Are you sleepy?
It's important to stick to the same answers when doing this drill in future lessons.

The teacher can expand on the answers. For question 3 above, "How are you?", picture cards can be used to describe the different answers a student may have. Eg: I'm happy / sad / sleepy / angry / hungry / thirsty / hot / cold.

Task 3: Singalong - ABC Song

Students singalong whilst the teacher points to the letters of the alphabet. Most classrooms will have the ABC song on cassette or CD.

Repeat this exercise twice. The 2nd time, select a student to do the pointing whilst the other students sing.

Task 4: Pronunciation Practice

Teacher selects 5 letters and pronounces them in the following manner:
D der D der D der Dog. E eh E eh E eh Elephant.
To clarify, the D would be pronounced as der and E pronounced as eh.

Task 5: Writing Practice

Students practice writing 1 letter from the alphabet on the whiteboard or on a piece of paper. Students follow the teacher's writing order. Teacher counts the strokes as writing takes place. Eg: "A" would be 3 strokes. 1.....(1st stroke) 2.....(2nd stroke) 3.....(3rd stroke).

Task 6: Letter Recognition

Classrooms often have posters of objects with the English word below. Students are asked to walk around the classroom finding the letter they just wrote.

Demonstrate first by example. If there is a "weather poster", the student may find the letter "a" in the word "rainy".

Task 7: Following directions

Using large action flashcards, the students can learn various directions. Start with 4 flashcards in the first lesson and only expand to further directions as competency is reached.

Sample actions flashcards are:
  1. Walk forward
  2. Walk backward
  3. Stand
  4. Sit
  5. Jump
  6. Run
Initially, flashcards will need to be shown to students prior to actions being performed. Once students have learnt the directions, the flashcards can then be shown after students have correctly performed the action.

Task 8: Snap

Place the action flashcards from the previous task on the floor with students sitting around them. Instruct students to place their hands on their head, mouth etc. Then name the direction and see who is fastest to snap it.
Teacher: Put your hands on your head.
Teacher: Put your hands on your shoulders.
Teacher: Where is "run"?
The teacher will also need to perform the above directions for students to mimic.

Task 9: Singalong

Choose another childrens English song. Eg: Rainbow song where students learn the colours. Use a picture of the rainbow and point to the colours as the song is being sung.

Task 10: Text book

Students open their Tiny Talk text book and complete a lesson. This is a very good text book for children where they have to then find the matching stickers in the back of the book.

Task 11: Clean Up

Instruct students to pack up and tidy the classroom.

Task 12: Singalong

Sing the Goodbye song and allow students to then leave.

Of course there may be other tasks, props and ideas you can use to replace some of the above. The most important task above is learning the ABC's. Recognition of the English alphabet will speed up their learning in future years.

The above lesson plan can be carried out over a 50 minute lesson. Careful not to go overtime. If you feel you are running out of time, then it's fine to skip some of the above tasks.

Re: 3.1 Lesson Plans for Children

For children it is very important that the students are told to recite and read the lessons "loudly". This practice needs to be followed as this may help develop the accents, grammatical errors, pronounciation and other stuffs.
