Arrow 1. Knowing Your Student

Student Types

A successful teacher understands that different age groups have different needs. A student's learning style is dependant upon age.

Student types can be broken down into the following 5 categories:
  1. Toddlers (age: 2~5)
  2. Elementary (age: 6~12)
  3. Junior to High-School (age: 13~18)
  4. Adults (age: 19~50)
  5. Seniors (age: 51+)
A teacher needs to apply a different teaching style to suit the student type.

Some actual infomation on learning styles

Seven basic styles of learning have been identified and can be use with any age group.
  1. Linquistic: these people learn by using language- listening, reading, speaking, writing.
  2. Logical: these people learn by applying mathematical formulas and scientific principles.
  3. Visual: these people learn by seeing what they are learning.
  4. Musical: instead of finding music a distraction, these people learn well when information is presented through music.
  5. Kinesthetic: movement and physical activities help these people to learn.
  6. Intrapersonal: these people have a good understanding of themselves and can learn best if they can relate what they are learning directly to themselves.
  7. Interpersonal: these people have a good understanding of others and learn well by working with others.
I find one of the most effective methods is to do the lesson in the book and then get it out of the book and into the classroom. For instance the simple there is/there are lessons are easily taken out of the book and become more concrete when taken out of the book. There are 10 girls and 8 boys in the class, there is a blackboard on the wall, there is a book in the bag, there are three mothers in the room. Works great with prepositions of place as demontrated above.

Mime can easily demonstrate the use of past continuous. I was working at my computer when the telephone rang. It also demonstrates the idea of one action interupted by another action.

In short, for a better understanding of the grammer get it out of the book.
