I've heard a foreign teacher use the excuse that in her own country it's permissible to be late as often as the employee wants. She then told her employer that cultural differences were in play and because of this, the employer should tolerate her vagrancy.....the employer looked at me and asked what he should do. I asked how many times, since the commencement of the employees contract, had she been late. He said many many times, like how many times I asked. Get this folks, she'd been employed for a grand total of 3 months, and had been late an astonishing 51 times! I told him that she'd breached the contract, the spirit of co-operation as contained in the contract and also the trust placed in her by the employer, the students, the parents and all of her fellow foreigners working in China. I said she was an embarrassment and should be told to leave forthwith, giving her week to pack and get out! The employer agreed and fired her ass on the spot. She tried to evoke SAFEA and I told her to forget that idea, she'd lose in 60 seconds flat! Late teachers affect not only the students and school, but also all of us who genuinely try to maintain a good reputation for our fellow foreign teachers. The fact that we're late very rarely can be, and usually is, overlooked as long as the reasons are viable. A pack of obvious bollocks isn't viable and the employers aren't stupid either... she got what she deserved, the employer lost a few students, but I stayed and helped for a coupla weeks while he recruited another teacher and all ended up roses. Ratbag teachers are out there just as much as ratbag employers. Nuff said. ![]()
