Thumbs down Student Loan Debt

Student Loan Debt at All Time Highs

Tuition fees have been rising fast: they are now 4 times higher in real terms than they were in 1975.

If you add in various necessities, such as books and accommodation, private college students fork out just over US$29,000 a year, while their peers on 4-year courses at public universities pay just over $12,000 a year.

Many local governments have cut the money they give public universities, pushing more of the costs on to the students. And with an ever increasing demand on university places, these universities have been able to hike tuition fees.

Rising demand is certainly a sign of health, but high fees present a challenge for the poor. Costs put off 48% of qualified high-school graduates from attending a 4-year university, and 22% from attending any college at all.

So where is the future of education when only the rich can afford it?

A student from Arizona State University can expect to graduate in 2007 with $60,000 in debt. So what was your debt after graduating university?

Money for students

My name is Lis,
I am a volunteer for HelpaStudent.com

We are a group of students who created a site Help a Student.com Our goal is to collect 1 million dollars before the end of the current semester and give the money out to students who are in desperate financial need.

Participating students post their stories and visitors to the site get to choose who gets to win the money.

Please support us by mentioning our site to your audience. Students who visit your blog are very likely candidates to come up with fun and creative stories!

Thank you

student loans

Student Loan Debt Becoming a Heavy Burden

another fact added to that is this taken from here:

"Graduating seniors who just finished their degrees on average carry debts of $19,000 or more. On the other hand, medical graduate students carry debts in the range $19,000 - $105,000 (Source: Department of Education)."

max 105,000$ in debt?? this is insane!!

Re: Student Loan Debt

I will have to go to India to get Dental work done. If you have major Dental work that could add up easily equal that of a student debt. I COULD get it done in Canada or US and go abroad and teach after the bills come in . I don't think a dentist would be to eager to track me down in Colombia or Mexico . The authorities have enough to worry about. They would tell the dentist to go back home and put his money where his mouth is The dentist can go and shag himself They can make $300K clear a year.....

Re: Student Loan Debt

Niko... your profile shows you in Australia... are you Australian ?

In Australia, most - if not all - degrees are payment-deferrable.
I paid about $500-600 a year for all fees and books while at uni. The rest came out of my tax over about 10 years after graduating... a few dollars a month. Didn't even notice it !

Re: Student Loan Debt

Yep, am Australian. Thank goodness for the HECS system. (Higher Education Contribution Scheme for those who don't know)

Though I wasn't able to make use of it as I went to a private Uni. Something I regret now.
