![]() | Student Gender Ratios Male Students outnumber Female Students It's always interesting to note that the majority of my corporate English classes comprise of male students. If one was to checkout the ratio of men to women in local English language schools, then you would find the opposite. Female students outnumber male students in language schools. I'm in a good position to make a comparison as I teach English to both corporate classes and a local English language school. Still to this date I cannot explain why there is such a large difference in student gender ratios between corporate classes and local language schools. The student demographics are similar. Probably the only explanation I can find is that corporate English classes start at around 6pm. By this time, female office workers are already at home looking after the household. Tutu L. ![]() | Re: Student Gender Ratios There is a far higher ratio of women to men in Mongolia's English language institutes, and in government schools and also in the university i worked for it's usually the girls who outdo the boys in test scores, attitute and participation. It's often a topic of conversation amongst English language teachers and for the best part we agree there is a simple answer as to why this seems to be the case. Mongolian women want a secure future. Mongolian men want to sit around and drink vodka. ![]() |

![]() | Re: Student Gender Ratios What type of corporate classes are these? That is, what specific type of business are they doing? I've had this same question with another of other expats in the area, and the consensus seems to be that girls are pushed (socialized?) more towards the arts and languages, and boys towards business and leadership roles. Thus giving a good reason why most of our students (at least in Asia) are women. I'd take this a step further and ask how many of us out there have had male language teachers? For every male language teacher you had, how many female language teachers have you had? In my high school back in the States, all of the language teachers were women.
