Initial 100~200 Hours of Learning

What is the place of grammar in the first 100 or 200 hours of language learning?

In the initial hours, can grammar contribute effectively to the mastery of a spoken language? Or is the threat too high that it will:
  1. get in the way.
  2. take time away from more productive activities.
  3. convey the wrong impression of what language acquisition is.
If grammar learning can contribute in a positive way, how?

The present conclusion shared by many professional teachers, is to not deny that formal grammar learning has value, but to exclude it from the classroom and relegate grammar to out-of-class study.
