![]() | What's that in your mouth? So you have just arrived in a foreign land to teach or study. Can you remember your first meal? Was it a Western meal or an exotic Asian dish? Part of the experience of living overseas are the encounters with strange foods. But I urge all teachers to try everything at least once. The world would be a boring place if there were no new experiences and surprises for us in life. I remember my first Asian breakfast. Eating fish guts! Maybe you think I'm exaggerating, but it's true. Look up "shiokara" in Google! But, but but.... Have you ever thought what other cultures think of our foods? Something normal to us can seem so strange to others. In our world, most fast-food restaurants use American beef which is reliant on an array of antibiotics and medicines to counter the effects of a highly unnatural diet that includes cattle blood and rendered waste from hog slaughter houses. So there you go, would you rather eat fresh fish guts or highly processed cattle waste injected with medicines? Mike D. (Japanese Student - Tokyo, Japan) |
