TIPS - Thailand Culture

Ever taught or studied for a while in Thailand?

Like most foreign countries, Thailand is no exception to strange peculiarities. There will be cetain things that just don't make sense or you are not aware of. Before living abroad, be sure to have a quick readup on the local customs and taboos.

Topless Bathing

Thais are traditionally modest (they normally swim in a t-shirt and bermuda shorts), so foreign females should not go topless in public. Those who do are considered ignorant or dismissive of local values.

Tax-Free in Thailand

When purchasing tax-free items at big stores, ask the vendor for the yellow form required by the aiport customs for reimbursement. Many sales assistants will not give it unless otherwise asked.

One of the great things you can do in Thailand is bargain shopping. If ever you get the opportunity of working in Thailand, you'll be amazed by how much you could save in purchasing Thai products there.

Re: TIPS - Thailand Culture

Would someone really consider topless bathing in another country without knowing the custom? I wouldn't do that here!

Re: TIPS - Thailand Culture

I would be interested to know if things have settled again in Thailand as a tourist destination after the Tsunami disaster.

Definitely. Business is back to normal, the girls are back out on the streets and you wouldn't even notice there was a tsunami a few years back.

Re: TIPS - Thailand Culture

That sounds really fantastic. I have always loved Thailand, the climate and atmosphere. Now that things are normal it must be fun and excitement again.

Re: TIPS - Thailand Culture

Are things truly back to normal after the Tsunami? A coup by the army, a few bombs exploding in tourist areas etc can hardly be called back to normal now can it?

As for topless bathing, I'd imagine that in the Muslim south, that'd go down like a lead balloon so it wouldn't take a moron to figure that one out!

Honestly, how stupid do some people think we are?

For the record, Thailand is a fantastic place, but I prefer China, a bit dirtier and crowded but life's not so bad here!
Nuff said,

Re: TIPS - Thailand Culture

Bombs going off in tourist areas? A coup by the army? I think you have your wires crossed with Bali and Indonesia.

No such problems like that in Thailand. As I said in my previous post, things are back to normal after the tsunami.
