Question Teaching in Saudi Arabia

Is teaching in Saudi Arabia safe?

Of all the English teaching job ads I come across, it seems the ones for teaching in Saudi Arabia are the most lucrative.

I don't know about other teachers, but I would feel a little scared teaching in Saudi Arabia.

I can't imagine being too social if living in Saudi Arabia. For most expats and English teachers, I would think they mainly stay indoors and don't venture out to explore the country.

Am sure the general Arab community would have no problem with us, but still I wouldn't want to risk getting known by the wrong circles.

It's alarming to see some ESL Job ads for Saudi Arabia advertise:
"security compounds for your classrooms and accommodation..."
Doesn't make me feel too warm and fuzzy within.

I'm an English teacher now in Vietnam, and am considering which country to teach in next. As much as I would love to teach in the Middle East, I don't think it will be happening for me in this lifetime.

Perhaps someday, peace can be restored to this part of the world.

I do not agree on the point that the Saudi Arabia is unsafe country.People freely move here. I think you should check the present condition in Saudi Arabia. I personally telling you as per my experience, Saudi Arabia is not much unsafe as you are talking about.

Re: Teaching in Saudi Arabia

I was friends with a librarian who had worked in Saudi Arabia for awhile and liked it quite a bit. Like you mention, the pay was very good and they were afforded a lot of time off and travel vouchers.

This was several years ago, but at least at that time he said he and his wife always felt quite safe.
