Talking PRAGUE....where dreams are made?

Hey Guys,

Been in Japan for 4 years working as an English Teacher and I think it is time to move on and experience Europe. I know it isnt easy for Aussies or Americans with the visas over there so I just wanted some advice on finding work in Prague.

I would like to know...
  1. If any of you have worked in a good school in Prague or have any contacts for me? hehe
  2. If an Online 140hr TEFL certificate and 4 years classroom ESL experience will be adequate to find a good job?
I would be happy to give anyone advice on living or moving to Japan in return....

Thanks very much

Take care!

Re: PRAGUE....where dreams are made?

Been a while since I've been on. I don't know much about Prague, but if you do hold a Bachelor degree and TEFL certificate coupled with 4 years teaching experience, then you would be quite hot property.

My first job was with the Caledonian School. Good school and always hiring. Were also a few Aussies working for them at the same time I was. Biggest school in Prague with over 140 teachers.

Re: PRAGUE....where dreams are made?

I have a related question, so I'll just leech onto this thread.... I'm headed to Australia for my Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) in February (subjects HSIE [history] and computer studies). I have a BA from Canada, and lots of instructional experience (though not teaching English) and formal instructional training (through the Canadian Armed Forces and Cadet programmes). I also have a TESOL certificate, and I'm working towards and advanced diploma.

My question is, would my GradDipEd help me find the job of my dream in the Czech Republic (or Slovakia) even if it's not in teaching English?

On a side note, I was planning on teaching English for a few years to get more experience. It's tough competition for BEd. programs here in Canada, but then I found out about going to Australia instead. I've never really given up on teaching English; I want to experience other cultures and languages. Prague has been my goal since I first started looking into it.

Re: PRAGUE....where dreams are made?

I think you are more than qualified to teach English after completing your GradDipEd. The only problem I forsee is that many European countries require their teachers to hold an EU passport. If this isn't a requirement, then you should be fine with getting work in Prague or the Czech Republic.

I'm sure it will be easier finding a teaching job than a non-teaching job. Many come to Asia to teach, and after a few years try to enter other industries or office jobs but they cannot. You need to know the local language very well before you can have hope of working in an industry other than ESL.
