Contracts and casual teaching in Thailand

Hi I need some help regarding jobs and what the norm is.

I was hoping to go to Thailand to teach for approx 3-6 mths and have read that you are expected to sign a 1yr contract with employers and finding employment for this short time would be near impossible.

Does anyone know the norm?

Thanks

Arrow Short-term teaching contracts

Unless you engage in a summer camp or volunteer teaching placement, then it's quite difficult to come by short-term teaching contracts (ie. less than 1 year).

Reason being is that most if not ALL countries require a minimum 1 year contract by teachers before the visa office will issue a working visa.

Even if you do have a working visa, many schools still prefer a 12-month commitment, especially for children classes. Schools do get a bad name if there is a constant teacher turnover. Mothers don't like this, and it shows instability.

Company classes are possible as they only last for the duration of the contract, which can be anything from a few weeks to 1 year. But you cannot teach company classes if you don't have the correct visa.

Does this info help? Probably not the type of response you wanted to hear though.

You could always consider teaching as a volunteer for 1 month or so, and then perhaps the school would allow you to stay on and pay you. But there would be no guarantee.

Or try to find teaching jobs that require a teacher urgently. I once did this. Saw the ad on Thursday, and by Tuesday the following week I was in another country teaching on a holiday visa. The holiday visa was good for 6 months too.

As per Thailand authorities, you need to have at least 1 year contract with school to issue work visa. As you have mentioned that you are going for 3-6 months, its better to apply for a volunteer teacher. You could always consider teaching as a volunteer for 1 month or so, and then perhaps the school would allow you to stay on and pay you. But there would be no guarantee.

Go to Volunteer Teach English to consider volunteer teacher in Thailand.
