Cockroaches in Cambodia

I suppose, while we are on the topic of food, let me add my 2 cents worth.

Cambodia is where a friend of mine buys live fruit bats and turtles at the local market and then keeps them as pets. They are intended as food.

He is no vegetarian, but just eating part of a staple diet in Cambodia. As an Engilsh teacher, his students came up with the fun game of "What will the teacher eat next?"

It was intended both to introduce him to local cuisine and to test his stomach. He was fed snakes, tarantulas stuffed with nuts, dogs, toasted grasshoppers and all sorts of other treats.

He said the worst thing his students gave him were cockroaches.

I asked him what was so bad about the cockroaches, and he said that a lot of things were bad about them; for one, they were still alive when you ate them, so you could feel them wiggling in your mouth until you bit through their hard shell.

As with most English teachers here in Cambodia, we keep well away from these type of foods.
