![]() | Cairo - Salary Hi, I am thinking about applying for an English teaching position in Cairo - I have to say in my application what I expect to be paid! Does anybody have any idea what the market rate is?. Accommodation is supplied and the hours are from 8am - 4.00pm. It is a nine month contract with return airfares. I would appreciate any input. It is the Sakkara Language School from Kindergarten to Secondary level. |

![]() | Teaching Salary in Cairo, Egypt Teaching salaries in Egypt are quite low compared to Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Don't expect too much as all your expenses are paid (except food). Treat it as a unique experience! Sakkara Language School doesn't pay as high as some of the other places such as Choueifat, El Alsson School and other international schools in the area. Expect around USD 600 / mth, but ask for USD 850. The school just wants to make sure you are aware the salary will be below USD 1000. Ask the school to pay you in UK Pounds or USD if possible. Do let us know when you find out your salary. Would be interested to hear what Sakkara are willing to offer. Good luck! ![]()

![]() | Re: Cairo - Salary I think 6000 LE/month would be a nice salary....considering you'll be paying your own rent (at least sharing) this would work. I taught KG2, Grade 2 and Grade 3. I always managed to find time to tie an extra art lesson into the curriculum. The exams are highly structured & very appealing to Egyptian parents. It is not well-rounded, in my opinion (you might find time to squeeze in a creative writing exercise since so little//none of the curriculum is dedicated to this). I would not, however, say that it isn't an education. The maths and science standards are through the roof. Parents love that their kids excel in these two areas. Lots of these kids go on to AUC and some American/British unis and major in things like Engineering and Pre-Med. Not many of them are liberal arts grads, that's for sure. I would personally not choose this education for my own children, but lots of parents in the Middle East think it's the best, despite you telling them it's a burnout for their kids. It's a business that appeals to the Middle Eastern approach towards education. The saddest part is children with learning challenges who's parents refuse to take them out (and the school rarely kicks kids out). It's also sad for kids who are intelligent, but not great test takers. |

![]() | Re: Cairo - Salary Are you sure you are being paid USD3000 a month + accommodation provided? Because in Egypt, the average annual salary is less than USD4000 per year. Expect hustle and bustle as Cairo is one of the largest cities in the world with around 20 million people! There is a wide gap in wealth, from those that earn millions a year to those that earn less than $20 a month. Government jobs with good job security pay less than $200 per month. Probably the average salary for a university graduate with a few years experience is about $300 per month. So I would question it very much if you are being paid $3000 a month + accommodation provided. In the past 10 years, the quality of life for Egyptians has definitely improved, however there is still quite a lot of poverty, and you will no doubt see this when you are there. Traffic is really bad and travelling short distances can take you hours. Checkout the photo of the street in Cairo. Now this should give you an idea of what to expect.

![]() | Re: Cairo - Salary Well, you are on a good package then if they do deliver as promised. Is this contract for a teaching job or IT job? Because I noticed your profile shows that your current job is "Software Engineer". If the average salary in Egypt is only a few hundred dollars a month, I don't think you need to worry about food cost and other daily expenses. It will be very cheap for you! I don't think Egypt has any issues with different religions living in the country. Have seen tourism adds in Hindu newspapers too, so I think there is nothing to worry about regarding this.
