Status of African-Americans in China

Hello All,

I'm new here and find this forum very interesting and informative. I will be coming to teach in January. I'm very excited and scared all at the same time. I'm a big black guy. How are American black treated in China? Anyone with any experiences?

Let me know.

Thanks.

Discrimination working in China

The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Convention 111 (Employment and Occupation) prohibits "any distinction, exclusion or preference made on the basis of race, colour, sex, religion, political opinion, national extraction, or social origin, which has the effect of nullifying or impairing equality of opportunity or treatment in employment or occupation".

There we go! Whilst the law gives everyone equal rights, is it ok to assume you will then be treated in a fair manner? Absolutely not.

Sorry to say, but mothers will always prefer their children to have an anglo-saxan teacher. This is the reality I'm afraid. Racism in China is not only directed to Blacks. Other Asians, Indians and Africans also experience this. However, if you are a Black native English teacher from a western country, then you will experience fewer hurdles.
