Cautious Schools in Shanghai

After you apply to a school, it's then best to do a search online for that school to see if it's on a blacklist.

Use the words "scam", "blacklist" etc., along with the school name. If you find nothing, then it probably means you're safe working for that school.

Shanghai schools

In fact, might not hurt to do online research BEFORE you apply...

There are lots of sites with school reviews; I'm partial to my site's partner site, Nate's China School Review at Nate's China School Review: www.ChinaSchoolReview.net

I had a rather bad experience with SILC (Shanghai Institute of Language and Commerce), which is a JV between Shanghai University and the Insearch program of the University of Technology, Sydney. There were no problems with pay here, but academic and other dishonesty are rampant and treatment of foreign teachers is at best disdainful and condescending. As an offshore institution SILC is in no way subject to Australian standards and it's basically a very, very profitable whorehouse. I couldn't live with this and I got out.

I also noted a lot of complaints from the Kids Castle chain in Shanghai, and of course chains like EF and Shane tend to suck anywhere in China.
