Rumble in the Hu Tong

I have been in Beijing for about three months. One of the most interesting things for me personally has been the Hu Tong. It is full of Chinese culture and tradition. I got up early one morning about 530 and went for a jog. Its like another world. I saw these old women and men practicing some sort of 功夫 kung fu. I later leaned it was Thai chi. They invited me to join them. I gladly took part. The older took my phone number I thought I was a one day thing. The next day at 530 the Chinese guy told me to get up and come outside.

After a week I was feeling confident and made a huge mistake. I walked up to the old man and I said 露两手 which means “show me what you got”. He knocked me on my ass in half a second.
I was a little scared after that. I am about 6’3’’ 230 not a small guy.

Is there any Thai chi schools where I can take some proper classes? I tired of getting beat up by old men and ladies.
How much do lesson cost?
How many styles are there in Beijing?

Lightbulb Learning Tai Chi in Beijing

How many styles of Tai Chi in Beijing? I think it would depend on the school that teaches it.

As far as I know, there are only 5 major styles of Tai Chi:
  • Chen style
  • Yang style
  • Wu Yu-hsiang
  • Wu Chien-ch'uan
  • Sun style
In Beijing, they have their own style called Beijing Short Form or Beijing 24. The Beijing 24 is created from the Yang style and as the name suggests, has 24 steps, and is well suited to beginners.

You can practice for free at:

- Beijing's Temple of Heaven Park

Places to learn Tai Chi, I would recommend from the below list:
Beijing Evolution Fitness Centre
Chaoyang District
Tel: 6567-0266, 6567-3499

Nirvana Fitness Club
Chaoyang District
Tel: 6597-2008/9

Bally Total Fitness
Dongcheng District
Tel: 6518-1666

Body Works Fitness Centre
Xicheng District
Tel: 6615-8800, 6615-8811

Powerland Fitness Centre
Chaoyang District

Tai Chi

Yeh, used to have interest in holistic medicine and Asian therapies.

Preying Mantis is related with Kung Fu, not Tai Chi. Note the spelling - Mantis, not Mantice.

Alll the best with your health!
