![]() | If you've lived in China, you've probably been disappointed by the lack of foreign movies showing in their cinemas. Unfortunately, China limits screening to 20 foreign movies per year! If you think this is low, only a few years back it was a limit of 10 foreign movies per year. The reason for the increase was to help acceptance to joining the WTO. Very few Chinese frequent movie cinemas thanks to high prices compared to their earning power. Chinese pay up to 80 yuan per movie, which is rather high for their low salaries. No wonder why illegal DVD's are flourishing in China! |

![]() | Re: Movie Cinemas in China I think the theater near me last year had a deal for 45 or 50RMB for a matinee. My neighborhood was extremely wealthy, but that only accounted for a small portion of the local population. The majority in that district work in factories and make about 800-1000RMB/month. It's ridiculous to think that people would pay so much to go see a movie here in China when the DVDs are only 5RMB. And for an economics lesson, I have realized that for the majority of life's needs here 2RMB has a similar buying power to US$1. That really does make movies and foreign products outrageously expensive.
