![]() | Human rights in China Hello All! I am still a bit new about all this, but am incredibly excited about starting my classes with TEFL institute TEFL Institute. I've worked out with my advisor that I am ready to leave for the PRC as soon as it's possible post-certification. China has been my obsession for years as well as a huge goal of mine. This will be a fantastic opportunity for me to expand my horizons into something that will give me a fantastic experience and to bring passion, skill & tact to whatever school I choose. My advisor guaranteed me that i would find work, as the demand in China is enormous. Now i'm having my nervous doubts here and there, but alot of people have assured me that the school is honest and accurate. However, my problem lies within something that's somewhat personal. I do happen to be gay. Flamboyantly, No. Not very obvious, however I do know China's view on human rights. So it's kinda worrying those around me. It's not as if i'm willing to bring myself out and about to a culture that i'm willing to adapt to. However, I'm afraid there in some way shape or form, this could cause me problems and bias from schools. My father says that the issue of Falun Gong is more taboo then homosexuality. But I would like advice from the horse's mouth. Any help or advice is appriciatied as this is a HUGE step for me. Thank you in advance! I'm very happy i found this forum, it's been a god-send to read everyone's experience, and as i'm taking my courses and etc. I'm happy to lend advice to anyone who is interested etc. Because till' i found this site.... I was totally alone finding information. ![]() Last edited by gfell; Mon 16-Oct-06 at 06:55 PM. |

![]() | Being gay in China I would worry about it too much. Being gay is quite acceptable nowadays in many countries around the world. Did you realise there are even a lot of gay references in the Chinese history. Just taking a look at some of China's art will show this. If you have a look at the image with this post, you will see artwork of 2 male lovers being spied on by a Chinese woman. Ancient Chinese has been of the belief that as long as homosexuality doesn't interfere with creating families and continuing bloodlines, then it's ok. As long as the man does his duties and raises a family, then having an outside male lover is his own business. Cross dressing on the other hand is a no no. It brings bad omens. Men should act within their roles in society and women too. That is predominantly the thinking of the past - that is, women in the house rearing the children, and the men outside working. I'm sure you would be happy to hear that NONE of the Chinese religions consider homosexuality as a sin. In Taoism, men can have certain amounts of femininity (yin) in them, and so it's ok to act accordingly. |
