![]() | airfare reimburesement/paid airfare Currently looking into ESL job in China and have received a couple of contract offers, one states reimburesment of airfare (I am in New Zealand) at the end of one year contract, seems out of reality compared to Korea. Anyone care to comment on what the norm is in China with airfares as part of the contract negotiations? |

![]() | Re: airfare reimburesement/paid airfare It's quite normal to have your airfare reimbursed if hired from outside of China. Schools used to pay the airfare upfront, but then some teachers abused the situation and only used the schools to free travel to China.

![]() | Re: airfare reimburesement/paid airfare I guess I was unclear in my query on airfares. The contract from China I have been sent states that the airfare will be reimbursed at the end of the contract, that is twelve months down the road. Are airfares like everything else perhaps, open to negotiation? |

![]() | Re: airfare reimburesement/paid airfare Yes, it's very common for airfaires to be reimursed at the END of your contract. Not much room for negotiation. What you could ask though is that half the airfare paid after 6 months and the return sector paid upon contract completion.

![]() | Re: airfare reimburesement/paid airfare Some schools will give you a portion of the airfare if you happen to leave early (with notice). Let's say, for example, your airfare reimbursement is 12,000 RMB. If you leave after 8 months instead of 12, some schools will give you that eight-months worth of "airfare" = 8,000 RMB.

![]() | Re: airfare reimburesement/paid airfare Standard practice in China is to reimburse airfare after the completion of the contract (key word: completion. If you don't make it through the contract, you get nothing). And from what I've seen since I've been here, most schools offer about US$800, which doesn't cover a one-way ticket to the US. |

![]() | Re: airfare reimburesement/paid airfare I agree with waixingren. Most schools won't honor that section of the contract if you finish even a day early. However, some schools will give you partial payment if you leave early. I wouldn't expect that most schools do this, though.
