![]() | I am appalled at the whole teaching industry in Taiwan. 2 months ago I had great intentions to teach English in Taiwan for 12 months before heading back to the US. I have a TEFL certificate, am a University graduate, aged 24, a native English speaker yet still no school will give me an English teaching job. The best I was offered was a domestic helper. This is absolute downgrading and racism to the full extent! Isn't there a something we can do about this? If I don't get an ESL job in the next few weeks, I will have to pack up and head back home. Do other Asian countries also have the same problem? |

![]() | Hey Sammy! Sorry to hear about your experiences in Taiwan. You should consider coming to Japan to teach English. Here in Japan, the company I work for doesn't discriminate. We in fact do have another English Teacher who is Jamaican but raised in the USA. I also have some good friends here in Japan that are Asian and still teach English. They are very capable and I'm sure you will do fine in Japan teaching English.

![]() | Are they really so racist in Taiwan? So what about Korea? Are they the same? That's where I'll be heading next hopefully.

![]() | Coloured English Teachers It's also part to blame on the parents of the children learning English in Taiwan. Schools and recruiters realise that an English teacher's colour plays NO part in their ability to teach English. Yet, many parents do want their children to learn English from caucasian English teachers. I think we need to try and educate these parents to shift their beliefs. In Taiwan, good looking teacher's tend to get better jobs over average looking teachers.

![]() | I'm surprised by the original posters problem. I know plenty of overseas Asians, and African Americans who are working as teachers here. It is sometimes more difficult for some people to secure work based upon what the market demands, but persistance generally pays off. |

![]() | I do know it's not easy getting a job as an English teacher at times if you are not a caucasian. However as Brian did put it, persistance does pay off. Just keep positive. Employers love positive and vibrant teachers. ![]() |
