Unhappy Mosquitoes in Taiwan

Teachers beware! Taiwanese mosquitoes.

Don't know if Taiwan still has this problem, but back in 1998 when I was teaching in Taipei, I got terribly sick. And it was only my 1st week there too.

The mosquitoes made me really sick! There was also no shortage of homeless dogs roaming the streets in Taipei. These 2 factors, combined with unhygienically prepared meals ended my stay in Taiwan 3 months into my 12 month teaching contract.

I don't know if the problem still exists, if it's only in Taipei, or if I was just one unlucky guy.

Beware of mosquitoes

Just had a friend come back from the doctors after having some red, itching marks just near his stomach. It's been red and itching for 2 weeks. Doctors found a filariasis worm from a mosquito under his skin. Doctors had to cut into his skin, leaving him with 3 stitches.

He just came back from holidays in Thailand, so it was either a mosquito in Thailand or one in Japan.

Interesting facts
Beware of the females!
  • Mosquitoes can transmit diseases, such as malaria and West Nile Virus.
  • Females require protein for egg development. Since the mosquito diet consists of nectar, which has no protein, most must drink blood.
  • Males have mouths that are not suitable for blood sucking.
  • Most species of mosquito can carry the filariasis worm, a parasite that causes a disfiguring condition characterized by a red swelling area on the skin surface.
