I am Asian and would like to teach in Taiwan

Hi, I am interested in teaching in Taiwan and have a Bachelor of Arts from NTBI (www.ntbis.com) but i noticed a clause in your Taiwan page that states you require teachers to only be from certain countries. "We require our teachers to hold a Bachelors Degree (in any discipline ok) and be a native English speaker from either Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, Canada, South Africa or Ireland." How can I appeal this decision? I am a native speaker of the English language. Does the above requirement apply to teaching in the other countries too? - Japan, Korea & China. I have done TESOL certification in Michigan, USA. Sincerely, Jeanette Sung

Dear zweet16,

Good question. The statement:
"We require our teachers to hold a Bachelors Degree (in any discipline ok) and be a native English speaker from either Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, Canada, South Africa or Ireland."
is due to Taiwanese law. A work visa for the purpose of teaching English cannot be issued to passport holders from non-native English speaking countries.

If you are a holder of a passport from a native English speaking country and have either a university degree or 2 year diploma with a TESL certificate (or equivalent), then you can still get your work permit.

Hope this has clarified things for you.

I believe the same exists in Japan and Korea. The rules are more relaxed in China however.

What passport do you hold? You may want to look into the working holiday arrangement if teaching in Japan.

I hold a passport from Malaysia. Sorry I never replied. I don't seem to get updates from this forum. Anyways, China is more relaxed you say?

Yes, you would probably have better luck in China. I do know for certain that there are more non-native English teachers in China than any other country.
