![]() | Chaotic Taiwan? Taiwan is known as Ilha Formosa, 'the beautiful island' Did you know that Taiwan was previously called Formosa? If you think Taiwan is just one huge chaotic place where gas masks are needed to survive, then you are surely wrong! Taiwan fringes on an ancient culture. You can even grab a bowl of traditional noodles at your local 7-11. Black volcanic rocks, towering mountains and a scenic coastline are just some of the sights I saw on my recent trip around Taiwan during the Chinese New Year. Taiwan is more than a chaotic jungle. For those who get out of the cities, you will be pleasantly surprised. The Chinese New Year was great! Yet, everyone seems to travel during this time, so roads were quite crowded. I rented a car with another buddy and we had a blast. But probably next year we will rent a motorbike each and tour on that. Faster way to get around and much cheaper. But then again, could get a little chilly on the motorbike in the middle of winter. The majority of restaurants and shops in Taiwan are closed during the Chinese New Year. Don't know why though, because so many travel, that you could really make a roaring trade if you kept your shop open. Anyway, see the attached photo of beautiful Taroko Gorge! Careful with your driving in Taroko Gorge. Some of the narrow roads are quite tricky and on sides of mountains, with Japanese tour buses appearing from around corners. Julia D.
