![]() | About teaching in taiwan Dear all, I am new to this forum and signed up because I wish to become an english teacher in taiwan after I graduate with my bachelor's degree this year. My background is kind of complicated, because I was born in Malaysia, but received all my primary and secondary education in Singapore, where English is the first language. I am effectively bilingual and very proficient in both Mandarin and English because of the system in Singapore, and have long been an admirer of Taiwanese culture. For the past three years, I have been studying for a bachelor's degree at University of New South Wales in Sydney and am due to graduate this year. I would like to ask if the chances of me getting a job teaching English in Taiwan is high seeing as to how I am not from one of those western countries and am only 19 at the moment? Any help would be appreciated. Last edited by gfell; Mon 15-May-06 at 10:00 AM. |

![]() | Getting a job in Taiwan Like most Asian countries, schools and employers do prefer native English speakers with a university degree. In Taiwan's situation, schools also like the English teacher to be Anglo-Saxon, that is, white in appearance. This is not a hard and fast rule, but being white will give you more chance. The fact that you were born in Malaysia will make it difficult to find English teaching work in Taiwan. Where is your passport issued?

![]() | Nothing is impossible I would go as far as saying it's impossible as there are non-native English speakers teaching in Taiwan now. But just keep in mind, that it will definitely be a challenge, and expect the worst case scenario where you cannot get a teaching job in Taiwan. Best case scenario would be you get your teaching job. Anything in between would be teaching English but not able to command as high a salary as a native English speaker. You would definitely need to be in Taiwan however in order to apply for a teaching job. Good luck and let us know how you fare. Cheers!
