Yes....that question again!

Hi All,

Very impressed with the site and how friendly and informative members are in the forums. Keep up the good work guys!

I'm a male aged 29 with an keen interest in Japan and it's culture but unfortunately have no university education/degree. I am looking to live/work over there for at least 12 months and see teaching as a good opportunity to do this. What would I need to obtain (training etc) in order to teach english in Japan? Is a tesl degree on it's own enough? Will I have difficulty getting a working visa?

Also, I don't know if this may help or not but I have a very close japanese friend who is resides in Tokyo.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Sean.

Best would be for you to apply a working holiday visa. You have until age 30 to apply, so you better hurry!

As you don't have much time up your sleeve, best would be to complete an online TESL course. That should be enough for you to find teaching work in Japan.

You can only get a working visa if you hold a minimum 3-year degree.

Having friends in Japan wont help with your job prospects. Holding a working holiday visa, a TESL certificate and being in Japan will be sufficient.

Many thanks gfell!

Would you know by any chance.....

Upon receiving a working visa how long I would have before I had to use it?

Does the 30 yr cut off mean I have to enter Japan before my 30th birthday?

Thanks again,

Sean.

At the time of application, you must be between 18 and 30 years of age.

Upon issuance, you have 12 months to use your visa.

For Australian passport holders, the Sydney Consulate General of Japan is the best place to start for information.
