Thanks everyone for help!

Gfell, you mentioned in your first reply the need for a bachelor degree in order to self sponsor. Is there ANY way around this? haha

Re: Self-sponsorship Visa in Japan

There have been cases of those with a Diploma (not a Bachelor degree) receive a work visa. It's just more legwork and evidence you need to provide in order to support your application. Sometimes it's also just a matter of having a friendly officer handle your visa application at the time.

Obviously holding a Bachelor degree will just make the whole process run smoother.

Re: Self-sponsorship Visa in Japan

There are some who do get a work visa with a similar background to you. Best bet would be to find a school located in the countryside that struggles to attract English teachers. If you apply and accept their offer, then they will do all the hard work and jump thru the hoops to get your visa processed.

Initially is a 1 year visa, then after that, 3 year visas are issued.

Re: Self-sponsorship Visa in Japan

Hi to all,

Currently I am looking at whether I can get the self-sponsored Visa in my current situation. I am on a Humanities Visa and it will expire in mid April of this year. I have started teaching privately for the past few months and things are going well but now I am becoming nervous as to whether I can continue this.

My situation is that I do have a contract with Kao, Japan’s largest soap and detergent companies however this only includes about a quarter of my income the rest is made up of private students. From what I have read on another forum and this one is that as long as I am providing them with proof that I have an income and that I am paying tax then I should be okay. Regarding private students I have heard that I could either draw up some basic contracts between me and the student or more simply just have their full names and contact details and maybe have their hanko... is this possible? If anyone can give me some advice on this, that would be a big help! Also I want to avoid paying any business registration at city office…

Cheers

Re: Self-sponsorship Visa in Japan

It's best to be well prepared when heading to the visa office to submit your application for a new working visa. I successfully self-sponsored myself with the below documentation:
  • Proof of my students / company classes I teach at. This proof consisted of contracts where the contract also stated that I am needed for the upcoming term aswell.
  • Tax return statements
Good luck and let us all know how it goes.
