question about the job application process

I've just started looking for work in Japan and have applied to several advertised positions. How long should I expect to wait to get an answer? Do employers generally NOT reply to say you've been unsuccessful at scoring an interview?

coz I've been waiting for about 3 weeks now and there still hasn't been any replies....I'm wondering whether I should keep waiting, give up hope on those jobs, or email them again to ask.

any ideas?

Yeh, if 3 weeks has passed, it probably means you have been unsuccessful. Nowadays, more and more it's the case that schools just don't get back to you if you are unsuccessful.

I would give them a call rather than emailing. That way you can get an answer right away. And continue sending out applications too.

Yep, many logs on the fire makes for a big fire, and many applications make for a success somewhere along the way! It may not be the one you want that you get, but it's a foot in the door and that's worth a lot when starting out.
I agree, call them and find out, it also lets them know that you really want to go there and work. Don't let them see this as over eagerness however, or they may take advantage in other ways, like reduced salary and benefits etc.
Good luck!

Re: question about the job application process

Is this response time more or less common across different countries or just unique to Japan? Are some countries typically faster to get into?

job application process

Pretty much the same throughout most countries. In particular, agents are really keen to get back to you as they usually have a heap of jobs for which they cannot get teachers for. Schools though are more picky and can afford to take the time in responding.

It will also depend on what you are offering. If you have exceptional skills above the rest, then you will get a faster response.
