prescription meds in japan

Hello Everyone,

Just want to say that this forum is great! Its been really helpful.
I have been accepted to work for NOVA, and probably going to Japan in February, or latest March 1st.

My question is: what is the deal with Japan and prescription meds? I have heard that you are only allowed to bring a month supply, any more and they may charge you with attempting to sell them?

Also, how likely is it to find a doctor to get a prescription while you are there? Should you just try to have your meds shipped from Canada (or US)?

Any thoughts, advice, etc is much appreciated!!

Incorrect. I don't know where you got this information from. There are 1001 different medications out there, and equally as many different prescription doses, so it would be impossible for immigration to set a number on how many you can bring into Japan.

I have brought a year's supply and sometimes even more into Japan with any questions whatsoever.

Japan is a first world country. Doctors and hospitals everywhere. Many doctors will be able to speak a bare minimum amount of English to you. I just prefer to have my medication shipped direct to Japan. Mum just writes on the package "prescription medicine" and I haven't come across any issues yet.

Vitamins and mineral supplements may be subject to tax so beware. Best is to use "prescription medicine" on those too.
