Serve the Tibetan community (north India)

Tibet Charity, a charitable organization serving the Tibetan community in McLeod Ganj (Upper Dharamsala) north India, is looking for volunteer English teachers to teach adult learners.

We are looking for people for a minimum period of 1 month, although longer stays are preferred. We welcome enquiries throughout the year.

Applicants will preferably have some teaching experience or a TEFL qualification, but new teachers will also be considered and will be well supported.

We have recently rationalized the teaching system and initiated a series of 3-month programs to Upper Intermediate level based on the New English File books. We are committed to creating a seat of learning that will serve the needs of the local community as fully as possible. The teaching is provided free of charge to the students and we turn no one away so long as we have the teachers to take classes. We aim to provide learners with a place where they can make real progress from beginner level to fluency within a single integrated system. But we need enthusiastic teachers to keep this vision alive. We have a sound teaching structure in place, a consistent programme and all the necessary resources to support our staff.

Our classes run from 9am until 4pm and we’re looking for teachers who can work for two to four hours a day.

Convenient local accommodation can be easily arranged, including discounts on rooms taken on a long-term basis. Though volunteers are at present being asked to meet their own accommodation costs, efforts are in hand to find funding for volunteer stays in the future. A nutritious lunch is laid on for volunteers on every working day free of charge and you are welcome to sit down and share in this very sociable feast.

The center is amply equipped with up to date computer facilities including fast broadband Internet which teachers are free to make use of.

You will be working alongside Tibetan teachers as well as our multi-national staff in the adjoining clinic and veterinary surgery. You will be teaching mostly Tibetan citizens living in India, some of whom have been through the education systems and others with no previous formal education at all, including recent arrivals from Tibet and Buddhist monks who’ve traveled from South India to learn English in this mild climate. Our students have more enthusiasm and appreciation than you could imagine and a respect for learning and for teachers which will inspire and uplift you. You have never taught students like these before!!

Based in the small town of McLeod Ganj, we offer basic medical care to those in need and provide essential English and IT training to marginalized students. We also run a veterinary clinic largely treating stray dogs.

Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, McLeod Ganj is a pretty, vibrant town popular with backpackers. Home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in Exile, it’s a cosmopolitan place with a range of restaurants, some excellent hiking opportunities in the spectacular surrounding hills and wonderful yoga classes. Living costs are low.
