About the School

Studyworld English Language School relocated to our current campus in August 2004. The school is situated close to the centre of Semarang in a quiet location. The school is a combination of newly renovated buildings and newly built, air-conditioned classrooms surrounding a grand historic building which is a fine example of old Dutch colonial architecture. Facilities include a large teachers' room, library and cafe (including fish pond!). It is an interesting combination of old and modern, and considered one of the most charming locations in the city.

Semarang is one of the largest cities in Central Java, but unlike Jakara, Surabaya and Bandung it is easy to get around, relatively cheap and the people are very friendly. The city is considere a hub for travelling around Indonesia, being so centrally located.

It is important to stress that it is not a tropical paradise - there are no beaches, few entertainment spots and there are only a handful of "foreigners" living here. Semarang is a bustling, business - oriented city with very little aesthetic appeal. It is very important to be totally honest about this so that new teachers do not arrive with pre-conceived ideas about swaying palm trees, white beaches and turquoise seas- Yes, Indonesia has all of these but you have to travel to see them!

The school provides brand new fully furnished housing (including air-conditioning, TV, VCD, Water dispenser, fridge, gas cooker, etc), transport to and from the school (the school has its own car and driver) and given that the salary is tax-free, you should find the monthly pay is enough to live on comfortably. However, it is important for potential teachers to fully understand that while the salary is high by Indonesian standards it is most unlikely that you will be able to save money or provide for dependants in you home country. We strongly recommend that you calculate the salary at current exchange rates into your own currency. Whilst you may quite possibly be horrified at the figure, please note that the cost of living in Indonesia is much lower than Western countries. As a guideline, it is about 75% cheaper. So you won't get rich, but as long as you are not an alcoholic then the money you earn is certainly adequate to sustain a good standard of living in Indonesia.

As far as work is concerned the school caters for students of all ages, from 3 years old to (occasionally) 63 - and all levels of ability. Starter to avanced classes are 80 minutes long and, on average, you will have to teach three classes per day. Maximum contact hours per week are 25.5 and classes normally run between 13.00 - 19.30 Monday to Friday, but there is the possibility that you will be required to teach outside of these hours, for example morning or Saturday classes - though these are unusual and normally rotated by the teachers.

It is vitally important to us that you are happy working here and enjoy you time in Indonesia.
