![]() | teaching materials in a hospital I will be working in a hospital, camp setting in Africa for 8 weeks. I will be working with younger teens, all of whom have some limited English already. Please recommend any materials, lesson plans or ideas you think would be appropriate. I am volunteering and this is my first trip of this kind. Last edited by gfell; Thu 26-Oct-06 at 02:38 PM. |

![]() | Teaching teenagers You will be working with younger teens? So they are around 15 and 16? That's pretty young to be already working. What is their literacy rate like? Can they read English? If not, then you should be working on the ABC's, reading skills and conversational English. When I say conversational English, I mean greetings, shopping, and typical work situations that they may come across. Try to get them doing pair and group activities whilst you move around the class checking on their efforts. If you have no resources, I would suggest taking a look at the New Interchanges Series of books. New Interchange I would probably suit your students. Most bookshops will stock this and I suggest getting a copy of this before you go.

![]() | Antonio, You have been a big help. Many of these teens are 14 or 15 and have been around the hospital setting a while and have some limited English. I think it is more speaking than reading ability so I will definitely start with the ABCs and move from there. I will pick up that book this weekend. |

![]() | Teaching teenagers My pleasure. You will find the New Interchange book very good. It comes with a CD too, so see if they have a CD player in the classroom. If not, then the Teachers Book contains all the script for recorded conversations. Since you will be teaching them for only a few months and the fact that they are still children, I wouldn't do the topics that focus on adults such as in the workplace etc. Just skip pages where you think necessary.

![]() | I think a lot of these children have no family or have been separated from their family, too. it is going to be very interesting. I am sure the nurses at the hospital, who often work on English as they can with the kids will want this material too. I am going to pick up an extra copy, and I have asked about the cd player, I even said perhaps I could have one sent to the hospital. I am not sure what is allowed. |
