Language centers are notorious for using inferior books rather than a standard. People don't take classes just because they get taught from a certain book. They take them because of reputation which seems kinda roundabout but it works look at EF for the biggest example you will find they completely revolutionalised the market.

If you do decide to go for in-house books it is best to do research into the authors and get a few case studies to make sure.

I believe that any textbook is of some use to a teacher even it is merely a guide as to what language elements to teach. Following a text book means a teacher will not miss anything out, and will progress in a logical order.

A textbook can be a spring board for the teacher. My approach is to introduce and practise key vocabulary and grammar from a unit before even opening the textbook. Then students read the unit and reinforce what they have learned through reading and writing.

I spend several hours discussing the potential publication of some of my resources with two publishers at a big TEFL conference recently. From the lengthy talks I realised that publishers are MORE interested in selling lots of copies than they are in providing something to a teacher or school that is of optimum use.

So for example rather than sell a single, one-off resource to a school that then suffices year after year they prefer to sell to a class of thirty children thirty textbooks, thirty work books, thirty fun books, a teacher's book, a teacher's work book and a teacher's fun book, plus any audio or visual material. Each year the work and fun books need to be renewed.

In particular with children's textbooks there are plenty of pictures, loads of white space and not that much content. The text book never contains enough activities so that the children have a chance of memorising the language in the unit.

So for me, whether the textbook is good or bad, it is only a foundation upon which to build your lesson.

My resources are ideal to use in complement with any textbook, and my preschool resource is a curriculum in itself with one copy sufficing for the whole class, re-useable indefinitely. Long live the world's forests!
