Public speaking is a very important exercise that can be done in classes to build the confidence of the students to speak english (or any other language). Students hesitate to take the stage and speak infront of the class and at this moment the teacher has to encourage the students.

We use to have teachers day - when students were to become teachers and go to lower classes and teach subjects.

Teachers can provide the topics to the students initially to get participation and once "fear is conquered" the students themselves and choose a topic and express their thoughts.

Yes, this can be great, but I would save that for an end of the semester project, so as not to intimdate the student's at first. Or using it in a more advanced class.
