 |  Lesson: Local / Rural Local means near a particular place. If a person lives in downtown Tokyo, then downtown Tokyo is their local area. Rural means in the countryside. Local can also be used in the countryside if one lives locally. Often I have heard students confuse the meaning of "local". They tend to think local means city only. Hope I haven't confused anyone.
