Lesson: Island / State / City - ESL Teaching

He lives in Illinois State <-- Correct or incorrect?

Once again, incorrect!

In English we don't usually say "island", "state", or "city" after the name of a place. In America, if you say "state" after a state's name, people will think you are talking about a university (except Washington and New York). We say for example:

- I went to Puerto Rico.
- He lives in New Mexico.
- My office is in Incheon.

When 2 places have the same name (Chiba Prefecture / Chiba City), it's sometimes necessary to say "city" or "prefecture".
