Lightbulb Lesson: Go to (verb)+ing

Yesterday, I went to shopping. <-- Incorrect grammar

I'm sure it's quite easy for native English speakers to realise that the above grammar is incorrect. However, it's a common mistake amongst those learning English.
  • We use "go to" when we are talking about visiting a particular place.
Eg: Yesterday, I went to Disneyland.
  • When we are talking about an activity, not a place, we don't use "to".
Eg: I'm going camping next weekend.
  • NOTE: You don't use "to" with abroad.
Eg: Last year I went abroad.
