![]() | "Hip" means the joint where the thigh bone meets the pelvis. You have one on each side towards the front of your body above your pants pockets. Parents don't usually smack a child's hip - it's hard and the parent would hurt their hand more than the child. They usually smack the child's bottom, or to be more vulgar, "ass", "butt" etc. Be careful when using these words. The Japanese in particular tend to replace "bottom" with "hip", and I'm sure most of your Japanese students wont realise the correct usage of this word. Example When I was a child, my father often smacked my bottom.

![]() | Re: Hip / Bottom / Rear End / Ass Behind is a polite way of referring to it. Backside is also acceptable. Buttocks is rather technical!
