![]() | Re: Shane English Schools, Japan and China Let's put this into perspective though, Ace. How many schools or companies do you know around the world make you call your replacement when you are ill? How many even in China or Japan? |

![]() | Re: Shane English Schools, Japan and China I’m sorry Ace, but I have never heard of anything as stupid as getting a teacher to organize a replacement teacher in order to have a sick day... Most schools allow theirs teachers to have a number of unpaid sick days during the course of their employment but usually only about 3. These sick days are also usually not paid by the employer so the teacher is taking an unpaid day off. What if a teacher woke in the morning an hour before work sick. They should then ring and find a replacement? If a teacher needs to take a sick day it is not their responsibility to do anything else than to notify the school or employer within the required time when possible. Some schools even charge the teacher taking a sick day a higher rate of pay reduction an hour than they actually get paid after there allotted unpaid sick days are gone even if they still need further time to get well. What teacher therefore would risk using their sick days unless absolutely necessary I’m sorry Ace but your post sounds like an employer. |

| Senior Member ![]() | Re: Shane English Schools, Japan and China Making someone find a replacement when they're ill is inhuman. I for one would NOt agree to such shitty terms at all! If one is sick, they're sick, simple as that. The onus should be on schools to have some sort of staff redundancy so this kind of eventuality can be covered. It's the schools responsibility to have a teacher for a class, it's the teachers responsibility to teach the classes as assigned, not to find coverage for themselves when ill! Yes, there are a few who make any excuse to "cut" class and leave it to the school to cover, but I'd think that those cases are fairly rare and are done by folks who have no inkling of responsibility or anything approaching caring about doing a quality job. Those folks should be rooted out and sent home as soon as they're identified. The rest of us who remain would then be dedicated to what we do and will only call in ill if we truly are! Alas, it ain't a perfect world is it? Nuff said, peace y'all! ![]()

![]() | Re: Shane English Schools, Japan and China I'm just about to leave Shane, and I couldn't be happier. Shane management apper to think that they own teachers, not employ them, and can force them to work as much as possible, attend meetings outside work hours for no over-time and with no paid travel costs, force people to work 12 hour days for spring and summer schools, and work up to an extra 18 days a year for no extra pay. Almost all the teachers in my district hate it and want to leave, moral is terrible, schools are closing, leaving full time teachers are being replaced by part timers or not at all, and bankruptcy looks like likely in the next couple of years. Do yourself a favour, stay away from this company run by blood-sucking scum. |

![]() | Re: Shane English Schools, Japan and China Greetings all. Have we all worked for Shane? Some misguided ideas about the sick teacher procedure here. Sick teachers don't find replacements - there is a rota of stand-by teachers each month with half a dozen names on every working day. Head office give a contact number to the sick teacher and the stand-by teacher expects to be called. Still not an ideal situation but it is explained in the orientation manual which all teachers have before accepting a job. Get it right before slagging off guys! |

Are you a Shane DoS/senior manager? `Cos thats what you sound like. What you say is true, but that dosen't make the standby system good or deflect all the other complaints against the company. Fact is, Shane is one of the worst employers in Japan, and everyone shouls stear clear. | |
