![]() | Why did you get into TESOL? Just curious why everyone got into the TESOL field. Personally, I'm trying to bulk up my graduate school application by learning a language or two and getting some international and teaching experience. |

![]() | Re: Why did you get into TESOL? I voted no reason.... nothing better to do. But actually, I come from the hospitality background and wanted to learn Japanese due to the heap of tourists in Australia. I first worked in hotels in Japan and then the lure of teaching English for higher money attracted me. |

![]() | Re: Why did you get into TESOL? For me it all started as a means to travel around and teach to support my travels. Only by teaching in a country can you really experience the true culture. Just passing through a country as a tourist does not give you even 10% of what you would experience as if you were living in that country.

![]() | Re: Why did you get into TESOL? I agree. And if you look at some of the studies that have been done on culture shock you'll find that most tourists never get out of the fascination stage, and, well, to really get to know a new culture, you have to get past the sheer awe of it and really into it.

![]() | Re: Why did you get into TESOL? It all started by accident. I've always loved English but never actually thought about teaching it. In fact, I always said to everyone that I could do everything but teaching. Guess what happened after during my first year at university!? I started teaching and ever since then never stopped!! ADDICTED !! ![]() |

![]() | Re: Why did you get into TESOL? I can relate to the "I never want to teach" aspect. Especially never wanting to teach kids (I was a big pain in the butt when I was younger). Karma works in quite blunt ways sometimes. ![]()

![]() | Re: Why did you get into TESOL? I wanted the opportunity to stay in Europe intially. Then I came back to Oz and now I'm looking for work here. I think TESOL gives you the opportunity to travel and work, which is not something that comes easily to those of us without British heritage etc if you're looking at Europe. |

![]() | Re: Why did you get into TESOL? I wanted to live in Italy or Spain. Did a quick course with a "method" school (Callan) in London and was posted to Italy. Found that i loved it, returned to UK and did my CELTA, never looked back,7 years later did DELTA,. 18 years later (OMG it can't be) am still loving it. |

![]() | Re: Why did you get into TESOL? I was looking for a way to get myself to Japan, and well, I figured I'd need something to do while I was over there. My university just happened to offer a degree with a focus on TESOL, and the rest is history. |

| Junior Member ![]() | Re: Why did you get into TESOL? In my case, travel, fun, save some dosh and get hell outta NZ - my mis-spent youth kinda caught up with me and before I knew it there I was at 30 with no real work history and a degree in (yeah yeah, I know) Sociology. Thank god for the TESOL industry, saved my sanity, gave me the opportunity to travel, save and build a work ethic. F**k knows where and what all I'd be doin' were it not for that chance to escape and reinvent myself. More power to all those thinking of it as a short term fun/travel gig - in my case, am now ready to step up and get qualified (CELTA etc) and 'really' learn to teach proper. 5 years as a 'dancing bear'/ stand up comic in Korea enough for me - time to really take things seriously. Btw, am kinda a geezer now - yeesh, 41 - where'd alla the time go? Cheers, Karl W NZ |
